Very clean and bed was very comfortable. That's the good part and the most important part. Here's the not so good. There was ONE plug that worked in our (upgraded) room and it was across the room from the bed. My husband needs his CPAP machine and when we enquired at the front desk, they couldn't have cared less that this was an inconvenience to us and dangerous to him. We spent the next 4 hours trying to find an extension cord in Edinburgh. The staff wasn't even interested in directing us to a place where we could get one and they're a lot harder to find than you'd expect. Also, the hair dryer was supposed to be wall mounted but was in the drawer of the desk - along with the wall mount that just dragged along behind it when you used it. There was a raised area in the room to see out the window which must added to the cramped nature of the room. There are a bunch of steps to even get to the front desk so if that's an issue for you, don't stay here. There is also only one elevator (which begins at floor 1, or the floor where you check in) and it's always busy so people with bad knees should beware. Back to a few good items. Location to Waverly Train station is excellent and the view - if you pay for it - it gorgeous.

I had stayed at the Old Waverley some years ago and loved it. It had a quirky charm with tons of character. This was a nostalgia trip for me and a first time for my husband. At some point the hotel has been modernized and in doing so has lost it's character. As you enter the hotel (reception is one floor up) there is a bell to ring to request help with baggage as there is no lift up to reception. Problem is the bell doesn't work and apparently hasn't for some time. Room service is available but with no phone in the room it's a bit useless. Breakfast is buffet style and is more than adequate, plenty of choices, coffee is very good. Staff were friendly. It's an old building so there some issues with various things such as drafty windows but are to be expected. Visit was okay but won't be back on next visit to Edinburgh.

Communication from initial booking through to booking out was superb. The Old Waverley being almost opposite Waverley railway station is ideally situated. We arrived by the sleeper service from Euston and were able to leave our luggage at the hotel before booking in during the afternoon. The hotel has many period features and is comfortable and well cared for. Food like the staff is first class. We stayed in room 214 which has excellent views of the castle. Staff are true ambassadors for the hotel and added to our enjoyable stay. Highly recommended.

Smelly room, tired old furniture and the view was just amazing ( see photo) Never again We have literally just arrived and moved room to something very marginally better ( the word better is doing a lot of heavy lifting here ) the reception staff are polite but I really don’t understand all the positive reviews of this hotel based on my experience

Great hotel in great location - few stairs getting in and then within but if you have small luggage is fine. We did have two separate bookings and our first stay of four nights we had a lovely room looking on to princes st. Our one night stay was a. Almost internal room which wasn’t so nice but we stayed purely to keep it simple for the so close train station . Breakfast was nice
